I am looking forward to moving to the Fort Worth area this December or January. As a health professional where speaking to my patients is necessary, how useful would it be for me to learn Spanish? Can most Hispanics speak English? Can most Hispanic school children speak English? What do you recommend? Thank you!

In Fort Worth, Hispanics aren't allowed to speak English, so you would definately need to learn spanish in order to communicate with them.

Seriously, though, learning another language, whatever it may be, can never hurt. And to answer your question, most Hispanics can speak English on some levels, some better than others. Kids typically pick up English easier than adults, so most kids should be able to speak english, or enough to get their point across. Any adults that don't speak any english usually have a friend or family member that can speak both languages accompany them when its for something important like the doctor, judge, etc.
