It depends on if by a $1.00 day one means without anything else added, i.e., produce grown at home, eggs from chickens on the farm, etc. If not, I don't think it can be done unless one eats from other's trashcans.

I did this during college. I lived one month on nothing but Mac and cheese, canned chili beans and rice with soy sauce packets saved over the years. With the extra money saved my room mate and I stocked the fridge with beer.

You have a poster here that can instruct you on the fine art of dumpster diving. Every once and a great while he pops up with nuggets of wisdom on just this subject.

Don't get me wrong I salvage thousands of dollars worth of coupons from the trash of others every year.

I wouldn't mind salvaging coupons, but food is another matter.

My point however was that on a dollar a day you'd have a tough time getting fresh fruits, veggies and protein.
Don't need those things. You can get a can of fruit or vegetables that cost less than a dollar though.

I don't eat meat because it's too expensive, but I will buy a dozen eggs that will last for several days. It isn't that I don't enjoy meat, it just costs too much. $3 a pound ( or more ) for hamburger meat?

Where? In the US? That is why we have food stamp programs. This idea that people are practically starving in the US is silly. There isn't any legitimate reason for anyone to go hungry in this country. The biggest cause is parental neglect.
There is nothing that would make me accept food stamps. I'd rather starve.

And I'm not the only one whose pride would get in the way of taking a handout.

And that's your choice, as it is for someone who accepts help, as it is for someone who dumpster dives, as it is for someone who eats on $1 a day.

When I worked at the soup kitchen, we gave out trays with fruit, cheese, and sandwiches that cost $10 at the airport, the date was expired, so we were giving them out for free. Many people who ate at the soup kitchen did not look down and out. The food we prepared there was really good, homemade soup with fresh vegetables, meat, with usually beans and potatoes, and we served it over rice. I ate there when I worked there. We had so much free food there to give away, expensive bakery bread--old yes, but good when dipped in soup. Doughnuts, that were fine dipped in coffee, or made into bread pudding. You can eat well on a $1 a day, if 5 people chipped in together, that is $35 a week, you can buy enough vegetables, meat, rice and fruit. But for one person to live well on $7 a week is not as realistic, you won't eat as well or as healthy as you would if you merged with a group or family.

Isn't Pride one of the Seven Deadly Sins?
