If eating out try to go for lunch and, for us, senior prices.
Always take a small cooler with water and soda, tea, whatever.
Rare times we get pizza, we go to Papa John's and pick it up on
our way home. Saves delivery costs.
Use coupons if possible. Check for sales items you like.
Compare...I like McDonald's frappe as much as Starbucks.

Lunch instead of dinner.

Chinese and Indian buffets. (Actually, most of the ethnic restaurants in my area have large portion sizes for the cost, buffet or not.)

Coupons and specials.

Ordering water ( I don't really drink with my meals anyway).

Ordering an entree that I know is good for another meal or two.

One thing I will NOT do is leave the server a lousy tip. Can't afford to tip? You can't afford to eat out.

Haha, yeah, I actually don't go to Costco much anymore (now that my hours are m-f), since it is just too busy (i hate crowds).

However, that pizza for 10 bucks is hard to beat!

Some things I do:

- Use Groupon
- Get a reward credit card that awards double or bonus points for dining
- Don't eat the entire portion if it's too large. Save it for lunch the next day.

Only H2O for beverage

Take home 1/2 of order, while taking advantage of "free" foods...tortilla chips/salsa, bread, crackers etc.

thats a solid plan, i do something similar...good advice on the happy hour as well.

i dont get being frugal when wanting to go out. but i guess youd have to define "going out". if you just want a bite to eat and thats it then you can find many places that arent that expensive, like a mexican joint or chinese. but if you want to get a few cocktails and a decent meal its going to cost money regardless. i dont think you should be frugal all the time, just when it comes to a quick bite maybe.

if funds are running low and you still want to get something out, there are plenty of cheaper places that have great food, just get on yulp and explore the area, so many restaurants are overpriced anyways.

In our home everyone is a great cook, enjoys cooking new things and finding bargain ingredients (edible landscape)

I have been really impressed about twice in 50 yrs of going out. I enjoy trying quality places, but don't drink and don't enjoy 'gourmet / frilly entrees'. For happy hour I get a root beer float or a milkshake. I haven't been to a buffet since caring for a disable parent who liked buffets (he died 10 yrs ago).

But... I travel a lot so get my fill of eating out on the company. I still stay to cheap eats. (Local Food courts in Asia ($2/meal, fresh markets in Europe $5/meal). When traveling on my own, I stop by the marketsin in the AM and stock up on stuff they are throwing out. As a farmer, I don't need the 'pretty produce'. The culls taste just fine.

Went to McD's with a competitor's coupon and got breakfast for $1.50. Including
refillable coffee.
