I don't mind smaller houses, but those 'tiny houses' of 250-500 sq ft are just too impractical. To me a small or tiny house would be anything around 1000 sq ft. I would rather just build a small house than have one on wheels personally.

Agreed. My house, which is 1,200 sq ft, is just the right size for me. A portable tiny house might be fascinating for several years, but I wonder how many people actually enjoy them for more than that. I'll bet the honeymoon wears off soon for many of them. Finding/changing/renting suitable land may be a problem too. And, as someone noted, what about air-conditioning or heating in certain climates. No thanks. I prefer to stay land-locked.

Yes, who wants to have to worry about emptying a toilet regularly on a permanent basis?

I started reading the advice being given generally about that aspect of tiny houses, advice that as often as not relied on ignoring rules and regulations. There are some common rationalizations bandied about, but it reads to me like a big cop-out -- an abrogation of the responsibilities people living in community with others have to abide by the standards of society.

I think tiny houses are a great idea, but it seems to me that the community and industry that has been built up around the idea needs more accountability.
This would be my worry also. Otherwise, I think they are cute and would be great for camping or if there truly a need for inexpensive shelter. We have an RV with heater, cook stove, sink, refrigerator, potty and shower. You still have to carry water, power the refrigerator, and empty the potty. It gets really old after a few days.

I'd love to have eventually some sort of cabin on a lake as a vacation place. The tiny houses are too small for my needs. I'd love to have a small 2-4 bedroom place maybe up to 1000 sqft where we could entertain family and friends.

The other idea I like about smaller houses is they tend to incorporate the outdoors with the inside of the house, similar to this one:

I saw a bit of "Tiny House Nation" on TV last week. To be honest, I don't get the appeal. Then again, I really don't get a lot of things people seem fascinated with these days.

FTR: Our home is 1400 square feet and I wouldn't want anything smaller than that. YMMV.

In many counties across the US they do not implement zoning laws on items that are under a specific sq ft. Some 'tiny home' owners in VT have taken advantage of this law and do not have to pay property taxes on things that are under 250 sq ft. Also, not every city has zoning laws (most do, some do not).

To me all these are are fancy mobile homes. Someone sold an idea and that's it.
