Whatever... I figure I am out to be sociable.

I get the craft beer and mixed drinks I make at home with the premium brands.
You can also think about inviting friends over to watch games and the like... and everyone bring a dish. Instead of going to a bar.

good idea to look for specials, and get on the email lists of the places you frequent. Many times they give preferred customers coupons only available if they send you an email. We are on a place that has concerts and they give half price tix if they are not sold out a few hours before the concert.

Also: groupons!
Easier said than done. Many bars or waitresses don't like splitting up tabs and when its not splitup you may as well drink the best because everyone else will tab gets split and you wind up paying the same as people drinking craft beers when you just had a pabst.

.
Go from table to table and collect the leftover drinks in your large glass,
after customers leave, and before the house has time to clean up after them.

Several here have suggested that one drinks (to get a cheaper buzz on) ... before going out to drink more. We're older now and this is not applicable to us; but, I don't want to be driving around out there - with a bunch of 'beyond buzzed drivers.'

For those thinking this is a good money saver, realize that even a 'frugal' out-of-pocket DWI expense is about $5,000! (Of course, this only happens to other people, who think 'it won't happen to them').

Dropping the brewpub thing since Ive been to most of them, and maybe make this more seasonal (warmer months) and less frequent (maybe once a month).

Dropping the 'buying rounds' with drinking buddy and go dutch. Also limit this to once a month.

Any thoughts on this (from posters who also like to go out but are economizing).
Well, Dayton, my first suggestion is to drop the "buying of rounds", if you can do so without feeling awkward. None of us in my group of friends do this and I'm sure glad. In paying for my own I feel a bigger sense of control. Once a month should be enough.

The rest are all up to you. I'm not into micro-brew pubs, myself, and I live in the Land of the Microbrews.

Do realize that cover charges often pay for the band. "Free" entertainment means that they rely on tips to help provide you the music, and I've noticed that few people tip for it like they should. If you don't want to leave a decent tip for the music, or pay for it up front, then you should seek a venue with no entertainment. But that's something I have strong feelings about.

Nights out for drinks can definitely bite into the pocketbook. What angers me is to opt for a drink that I'm willing to pay for and it's too watered down or short on the shots. I've become aware of a few places that do this, so I order a beer instead.

Obviously you shouldn't be doing that if you have to drive.

Sip slowly, get glasses of water with every beer and alternate sips, take advantage of the specials, drink at home on the weekends.

FYI: If you're feeling buzzed, you're drunk according to a "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" commerical I've seen on TV. Sooo, going out for a few drinks may not exactly be frugal. When out with friends, we buy our own drinks and do it responsibly. 1 drink per hour max.

I buy the cheapest drinks usually coors light is my preference. Try to avoid bars that want a cover charge

If I want a drink, I try not to go out to the bars unless its happy hour or something to that extent. I usually buy a case or 6 pack of beer or alcoholic beverage and ration it for the days I feel like I want to drink a opposed to going to a bar or club for a drink. It may not have the same social settings that people like when they go out, but you can also invite friends with you if thats what you want. At least this is what I do with my lil' student budget.
