One of the things my family and I love is vacationing in Orlando and enjoying their theme parks. If you've ever visited there, what are some of the things you've done to save money? Please keep in mind, everyone has their own situations and circumstances were their way of saving works for them.
For us:
There is a townhome 10-15 minutes from Disney World we always rent: 3br/2ba, 1300sqft, beautiful, gated, pool, clubhouse, $85/per night.
In a weeks stay, we eat all but 2 of our breakfasts and suppers in the condo (the rest are at a Disney restaurant we like), the lunches we eat at an in-park counter service. We also take in snacks in our backpack.
If we know we will be going to Orlando more than 10 days over a 12 month period, we get annual passes. After that 10-14 frame, you're pretty much getting free park admission. Plus free parking and 10%-20% food/merchandise discounts.
If we want souvenirs, we get them at an Orlando Walmart. The one near Universal Studios off of Sand Lake Rd. has an entire Disney section. Many of the same items at half the price.
I stay at my friend's mansion for free and eat his parents food... lol... that's my Orlando vacation. Sadly, I have no tips beyond that. Flying from NYC is really cheap.
Instead of seeing fake wildlife at the theme parks, take a walk around Blue Springs park for just a couple bucks per carload. Or kayak up the Wekiva River for just a few dollars ore. Or rent a small pontoon boat on the St Johns for half a day for $100. See manatees, gators, snakes, birds, turtles, deer, tons of fish, and so much more. At the very least, hit the Lake Apopka Wildlife drive for nothing more than the price of gas.
I only went to Orlando when my employer would pay for it or I had business to attend to. Crowds of people rotting in hot sun do not a vacation make for me.
Run up the road a hour or so to Ocala National Forest, and set up at a campground, stay as long as you like for ten bucks a night. Undeveloped sites, just a place to park a camper or pitch a tent. Pit toilet and water spigot and picnic table. If you don't have a tent, buy one and a Coleman stove for a hundred bucks, and a few dollars at thrift shop for cookware and spoons, stock up at a supermarket.
Good chance you'll have he whole campground all to yourself. Peaceful and quiet, it's part of "the real Florida".
we placed an add on craigslist under rideshare offering a ride in lew of sharing gas costs.
If a whole foods market is nearby, contact them for the cost of their buffet which is often very inexpensive.
My son works for Apple so gets tickets at a discount rate but many larger companies offer this too.
