Not true. Verizon has already stopped allowing activation of CDMA-only phones. The 3-G network is being retired at the end of 2019. You can absolutely “ bring your own phone” to Verizon. All newer phones use SIM cards now.
Decide what network you want to use. Pick an mvno for the cheapest plan. Then pick s phone that has the features you want.
I agree with you, but for general matter because some time people have old model phone, which is very likely, so the way I describe it doesn’t confuse people who aren’t not all that tech savvy. Nowadays, not everyone is into using smartphone because they might not like the touch screen, simple as that.

I've been getting these from QVC or HSN for years. They include a new phone, lots of minutes, and a year of service. If you don't like this one, there are others to choose from.

how long ago? I have a SIM card from them because it uses AT&T/sprint now. it uses voip for calls, but it is mobile data so as long as there is cell service from At&t
You want to look into plan call Pay As You Go. This is the plan that allow you to put let's say $100, and is good for 1 year. If you don't use all $100 by the end of the year, you might be able to roll over the balance to next year simply by adding another $100.
The phone you have to buy on your own, so you are left with checking out with which carrier that you want to use the prepaid plan on. In general, you want to get a prepaid with AT&T or T-Mobile because they provide you with a sim card, and you can use whatever phone you want. With Verizon and Sprint, you have to use device that works with their network, which in general has to be their company cell phone, so that wouldn't really work if you have a cellphone of your own.

Since 4g LTE came into being Verizon and Sprint also use SIM cards. If you have an unlocked CDMA phone it will work with those two networks.
I used to have a Tracfone, less than ten bucks, cost $80 a year with 360 minutes, on four 3-month $20 plans. But I ddidn't use it often enough to get my money's worth.
I had Virgin Mobile for a couple of years- $30 a month for 500 minutes of talk and unlimited tex and data if I let them auto bill my credit card. When I called to cancel (they're on Sprint network, which locally had a lot of dead spots) I got a $20/month retention offer from them.
T-Mobile has been good. I am on a pre-paid plan with an old style phone - a Samsung. I'm not sure this is still available, but it's worth checking out.
