I noticed these guys yesterday under a zinnia leaf. They just sit there, as if waiting for something.

Can you identify them? Are they friend or foe?

Don't know. But they seem big for aphids -- they are the size of ants.

I googled red aphid photos and it appears that's what they are. Pretty, but not as pretty as my zinnias will be when they bloom so they must die.

Do fish find them tasty? I have large guppies and bettas in water features nearby.

I think those are assassin bug nymphs. Friend. They are voracious predators who hate aphids.

Wow thanks I learned something new. Don't worry, even though my pest-identification skills need honing, I don't use pesticides anyway. I figure if something can't fend off the bugs by itself, it's not tough enough to live in my garden.
