We set up a small fountain in one of our gardens. When the fountain isn't running, the water sits stagnant in the decorative pool of the fountain's base. I am noticing mosquito larvae now in this pool of water.
What might I add to the water to kill them, without harming the finish of the fountain or the pump tubes. Also, the fountain does splash lightly into the surrounding garden, so any additives can't be toxic to the plants either.
You didn't say how big your fountain is. If the base contains a fair amount of water (75 gallons or so), try adding a few feeder goldfish -- the kind aquarium shops sell as food for other fish. They're really cheap, and once they get established, will keep your fountain completely larvae-free.
Besides, they add some flash and sparkle to your fountain.
Thanks for the suggestions. I'm going to guess it holds 10-20 gallons in the bottom. I can get a few free mosquito fish to try. If that fails, I will try the rings or pellets.
The mosquito rings are called "mosquito DUNKS". You will probably cut one up to use, as a whole covers a way larger area than your fountain. And yes, bleach will also do the job. For your 10-20 gallons, (that sounds like alot of water) you'd only need a cup. And the little bit of "over splash" wouldn't hurt your plants.
