I hope I am posting this in the correct forum... I am looking for ideas of this small area of yard. Photo attached, not the best photo but the only one I could find on my computer today. It is a section of yard that is right outside the back door of the house. You exit the door, there is a small brick stoop, and then a U-shaped plot of yard in between the house and a concrete parking slab. It's aout 5x10 feet, then connects to the main large backyard. Not sure why the previous owner built the driveway like this, but nothing I can (cheaply) do about it now.
I used to have the area just plain grass/yard but it was impossible to grow grass (just weeds) and even more impossible to mow the oval shape. Eventually I sectioned it off with a border and put decorative rocks in the area, but that idea didn't work well - just doesn't look right. I am now thinking of removing the rocks and putting a thick layer of mulch, with flowers/plants and maybe a birdbath in the middle. However I'm afraid of putting too much - or too little - since it is BAM right outside the back door. Any suggestions? The area is south facing, in pretty much full sun, hot summers.
What's your goal for the space? Low upkeep? Do you need to be able to traverse through it? Do you need to use it for sitting or barbecuing or a spot for children or pets to play?
I think I would go with potted plants, a bench, and/or table. Seems like a lot of work to re-do the patio surface. I pot up plants that take little care, only watering.

Rdlr, that is really lovely!! You have inspired me as I wait and hope for spring (in the midst of a snowstorm )!
I notice you have shades on your glass doors. If you're getting full sun that's bothersome you might consider erecting a trellis with a manageable vine. Miniature roses are hardy and fragrant. I'd not go with bougainvillea, clematis or wisteria for such a small space.
Otherwise, my rule is not to tend to something that doesn't give back. Herbs for full sun are rosemary (could also be trained up a trellis), sage, lavender and thyme. Other seasonal herbs in planters and pots. Mint is bright and verdant, but always keep it potted.
Get a strawberry planter for visual volume and, well, strawberries!
If you have a landscaping area is small, then don't plant to much tree. Instead of planting too much tree, a plant selected tree so it's looking better and sweeter. Plant different color of flower tress.
