So I found my can of wasp spray that hits from 20 feet, intending to wait until dark and then annihilate this new discovery. In the meantime, I searched the interwebz for "large ground wasp" and discovered that it is very likely a Cicada Killer Wasp! Apparently relatively harmless to humans. So I will let it survive I guess.

Anybody else have experience with these HUGE INSECTS?
One scared the crap out of me when I was walking to work maybe 2 years ago. Yes, it was that long ago, but I won't ever forget it. Read up on them and they are in fact very docile towards people. Good to know. I'd hate to be a cicada with those things around.

This is an old thread, but I was glad to find it. I have a Cicadia-Killer Wasp invasion right now and feel much less bothered by them!

I watched one of them dig his hole for about five minutes and in that short time, the dirt pile ended up about 3 inches tall and four inches across! They are so big that they fly around like they are under-powered! Crazy!

Cicadas attract copperheads here. If something less dangerous takes care of them, then that is great.
