So I bought a house a few months ago and have several fruit trees in the backyard. One of them still has fruit on it and I have NO IDEA what it is!

That's a persimmon. Very good odds that it is variety Hichiya.

They come ripe around Thanksgiving, will be a bright orange with a few black spots. Don't eat until it is extremely soft.

Look for a cookie recipe, they are good for that, though I liked to just eat them too when we had a tree in CA. Do wait for them to become soft.

Yeah, common in older yards in CA. I'm afraid it's going to be one of those fruits that becomes endangered, in a way. Perhaps you rarely see them in stores because they don't ship well? Anyway, they're good. I remember them from my childhood in the SF Bay Area.

Persimmon pudding, yumm. Persimmons are ripe and perfect when the fruit is very soft, almost mushy. If you try to eat it unripe, it makes your mouth pucker and feel dry.

They actually ship OK if picked when hard, and ripen/soften indoors after being bought at the store. I think they are just not well known. We thought it was really odd when we moved here from CA that many people were unaware of artichokes, and we used to grow them in the garden. They are more common here now in the stores but expensive and usually pretty scabby compared to the ones we got in CA.

Wish I had this tree.. I love persimmon but can only find them at a reasonable price at Asian markets around here. I am going to see if I can plant a tree in my yard, hope it will work in our climate.
