Can you suggest a specimen plant for a shade yard?

Whenever possible I'll always recommend my all time favorite plant/bush, which is the viburnum.

Plant native plants; for Canadians, are they called 'first' plants?

I forgot viburnum. I love them too, and there are so many varieties.

In Canada they are called native or indigenous plants, both words have the same meaning = "originating or occurring naturally in a particular place".

I agree with you, native plants of Ontario would be the best to start with.

Your question is vague so it sounds like you are very new to gardening with no experience. You have not provided enough information for other people to make appropriate suggestions for your circumstances. You need to be more specific about your yard and what you want for the yard. If you are new to gardening then I think the previous suggestion of starting with plants that are native or else plants that are already common and well adapted to the climate of your region of Ontario is a good idea until you have gained more experience in gardening. It will save you a lot of time, effort and money.

Do you have animals and children that will be playing in the yard? That's important to know so people won't suggest plants that are poisonous or dangerous in other ways.

Do you know what type of soil you have in the shade yard?

Do you want an evergreen plant or a deciduous plant?

Do you want a smaller plant for a flower bed, or do you want a short shrub, or a tree?

If you want a tree what mature height do you have in mind? You will need enough space to accommodate a tree when it reaches maturity, so how big is your shade yard?

Is the yard surrounded by other houses or trees or fences close by that will provide the yard with some protection from the elements?

Does the yard ever get any sunlight at all or is it in complete full shade all day long?

The OP has started four different posts and has not replied back to any of them. My guess is they are building post counts for spam reasons. One post was already edited by a mod.
