Has anyone used recycled glass mulch in their flower beds? I have seen it, and it is beautiful. However, I wonder about safety concerns for both people and plants. Is it only for decorative purposes, or does it work like regular mulch? Do plants do well in beds with the recycled glass mulch? Anyone have any tips or advice? Thank you!

I've seen it used in a few very small planting beds and sometimes by itself. It's fairly expensive and doesn't go far.

As far as I can tell, it's perfectly safe. They tumble it to remove sharp edges. It doesn't add nutrients and probably doesn't help the soil remain cool or retain moisture...so I guess it's just for decorative purposes.

I'd love to have a bag of green and a bag of blue.

Thanks ellie! I think you are right about the moisture and keeping the soil cool. The blue and green sound beautiful! I haven't ever seen it for sale. Rumor has it that it is coming from the area recycling center, so I'll have to investigate that source. It would be wonderful if they were giving it away like they are the other mulch!

I saw it in a couple of places in and around San Francisco. They were selling it in the gift shop at Cornerstone in Sonoma.

I noticed an ad in Garden Design magazine for a supplier called "American Specialty Glass" (americanspecialtyglass.com).

I'd like to use some in containers, but haven't tried it yet.

I saw a show on HGTV a few years ago. A home owner had an amazing glass garden. His entire yard was landscaped in glass with plants here and there and a pond. Sorry I can't remember the show name.

Thanks everyone for you input! I'm going to check into it this weekend if I can. With all the watering restrictions, it would be so nice to have something pretty to add to the landscape that doesn't need water.

Default Glass Mulch

Hi,

Our county is currently considering producing glass mulch from recycled glass. The machine rounds off the edges so sharp edges aren't a concern. I believe they end up comparable to rocks you would put in your fish tank (the machine makes them between .1 - 10mm). You could use them in your flower beds just like you would rocks. The other neat thing about using glass is the lighting. There are some really neat pictures on the web inside and outside using recycled glass.
