Everyone above's statements are pretty much it as far as its roots it mostly goes back to the 1700s in the Chesapeake as a fusion of NigerCongo and colonial British cultures. The Chesapeake had the most slaves and was were most slaves were sold to the deep south from. Now some might mention that the Carolina's had more Africans imported true, however, those people developed a subculture that was largely isolated I'm talking about the Gullah. The main African elements in our overall culture tracing back to colonial times are foods from Africa including okra or gumbo the word yam probably bananas black eyed peas sorghum and watermelon also our taste for spicy greasy foods and tendency to use meat sparingly especially when cooking collard greens which are tough green leaves cooked with some sort of fat and bits of pork or turkey. It also is such things as cornrow braids or sectional hair braiding especially of little girls hair and tying a cloth around the head this is an Africanism repurposed for in many cases hiding unstraightened hair another thing is a love of percussion and complicated ryhthms all these go back to Africa other elements of course back to like I said before Britain

African American culture is simply American culture. AA culture coincides with that of a unique ethnic community and traditions etc
