Hoarding is a real problem. It's important not to look at the extreme hoarders as a minimum standard for being a hoarder. Most of us, myself included, hold on to way too much stuff. We need not go to the other extreme, and get rid of almost everything. You just can't organize your way around having too much stuff.

When my wife and I moved out of the apartment into a house, we discovered that there was stuff that belonged to neither of us, we assumed it belonged to the other. Her previous roommate had abandoned some stuff.

I have an entire bedroom that we can't even enter because it is full of art supplies that belong to my wife. They have been there for years, and will never, ever get used.

And a big basement won't likely lead to less clutter: more space = more stuff.
