Depending on your area, Yelp is likely your best bet for generalists. Found our dentist, pedi dentist, pedi and OBGYN through Yelp and all providers turned out top notch, just like the reviews said.
Also used my local CD board to ask for referrals and cross-referenced those with Yelp.

I looked at the book our ins. provider gave so I knew I wasn't looking at out of network physicians. It is extremely costly if I do. We didnt know a soul where we moved to so I didnt really have a lot of options as far as asking for advice. Yelp is a good resource but in my area people don't use it to comment on physicians, just businesses such as restaurants and so forth. Be prepared you may switch until you find the right fit. The first doctor we picked was not a good fit for us at all. I also am not crazy about the dentist office we have. That will probably be another change.
traditional way is to take some cookies and visit the neighbors. ask them.
