I had a real estate agent (who is related to my friend and lived in the same area) to help with my search for rental property. My friend knew my style and picked out the perfect house for my family. It worked out very well because the house is beautiful, in a safe area and great school district.

Find an agent. Let him know you will buy in such and such months if you are going to. And let him/her get you a rental. Tell him what you need, even a short term lease is an option (usually 6 months).

Moving here was that nightmare. I found a realtor on line (weird, but true)before I came. I came here for 4 days, yes 4 days to find a rental. He found us a month to month till we bought. Almost impossible in these parts. If you say you will "buy" your options/help will open up. I was so tenacious, too, would not give up, which helped!

Good luck--we are at it again, moving too!! I'm gonna buy a cemetery plot in my next locale so I can't move again.

Have you looked in to manufactured homes? The majority of them allow pets and its like owning an full house except it really is just an double-wide. Id recommend checking out Hotpads.com, Best of luck in finding an place.

Yes, manufactured homes are an option for a rental. I checked into the Uhaul rental and extending days. They told me usually if you ask for one extra day, they will do it as a courtesy. You just have to mention it when you pick up. Additional days are approximately $40/day.

If it's only 6 hours away I would call a realtor and any possible places to rent, schedule a tight day of looking at places and do a quick trip up there. It's a pain to make a trip while you're trying to pack, but it will save so much work and anxiety when you get there.

I do want to make sure it's the right area and jobs do work out.
Get a Pod. They will move it to your destination, store it for you, and when you're ready, they'll bring it to your new temp place.

Dog, Cat & Other Pet Friendly Hotels at Petswelcome.com

I don't know how much help this will be, but maybe it's worth a look.

I am in similar place with move though no animals and not with the uhaul. I have done this before though where I am moving to place and have no where to live so I stay in a hotel till I find one. I am repeating myself a little but I agree with others about before you leave call a realtor in the area you will be in to send you some listings of rentals. Sometimes even if the owner states a year lease they will negotiate with you. Also call around rentals of apartments before you leave as well. Then set apts for the day or two after you get there while staying in a hotel. Also though you have to be very very careful about craigslist have you made a post on housing wanted for a place? Also have you looked on zillow, hotpads, vbo? I check realtor.com every day as well though that site does not seem to update as quick so some old rented places are still on there.
Since it is a short term rental and tough of course you dont want to live somewhere gross or unsafe sometimes you have to accept not the best so to speak just so you can have a place to live while you house hunt.

I spoke to a few realtors and they said it's going to be virtually impossible. They said people want to rent in the summer with a 1 yr lease because once the winter rolls around it's much harder to rent. They also said the dogs are going to be an issue. They'll keep an eye out for us and it helps that we're buying. I'll keep looking everyday.
