I'm moving from NC to FL and would like an open trailer for my lawn tractor, gas grill and a few other big messy things I don't want in the back of my moving truck.

When i pulled up a quote on Uhaul's site a few weeks ago it was reasonable, but I didn't have my move date. Now that I have my move date I went to book the trailer and it's pretty expensive. It's more than budget wanted for their smallest truck.

Does uhaul have any competition with their open trailer business?

We've used them every time we've needed a trailer. They have always been the cheapest. Sometimes it helps to look at a trailer bigger than what you need. I recently rented one to move some items and got to talking with the guy at the rental place. What he told me is that they (the franchise owner) make only a few bucks on the rental of trailers so a lot of places only want to do the trucks. On a one way , sometimes it's hard to find a drop off point for the trailer because of that - you aren't guaranteed being able to drop it at the nearest rental place.

Everyone stopped renting trailers because the liability was too great. Trailers cause a lot of accidents, especially with inexperienced drivers.

I know multiple people who have bought a trailer on craigslist, driven it to their new location, only to turn around and sell it there. You'll need to check prices on both ends, but usually this works.

I'm moving to Florida, so that's not going to work. Seems like a lot of people take that route.
