When we moved from Illinois to So. Nevada we got rid of a ton of stuff. We did bring most of our furniture but since the house in NV was bigger than our old place we still had to buy some new stuff.

I did the comparison of selling vs. moving and in our case moving was less. We did use a moving company (Bekins) that did a phenomenal job and their costs were very reasonable.

The other thing was that having our own furniture in the new place helped to make it feel like home. It sounds silly, but some things have sentimental value and most of it was in nice shape. It didn't make sense to get rid of perfectly good items that we liked and then have the added expense buying all new stuff.
