Has anyone here relocated without a job or without a spouse who was able to secure employment prior to moving?? How long did it take?? What did you tell employers about why you relocated and how did you secure housing without full time employment??

I am planning on moving to Austin TX from the NYC area (Queens) in late January. It is impractical to try to find a job when I don't know much about the area and when I am not moving for another month or so.

I have enough money saved for 6-12 months without working and can afford about $1,000 a month in rent. I figure as a single person I would need about $3,000 a month to live in Austin.

It can be done- I moved to Boston (like you-had savings) Basically, to secure housing w/o a job- if you have a good background (and $$) and they run a check, you are probably okay. You may want a personal reference just in case- if its a real nice apt. If a landlord comes up with a felony record, they can usually refuse you.

Basically, with employers, keep it brief (its really not their business, they are just trying to figue out if you are what they think is "transient") I would say that you relocated due to family; a relative- just dont say something flighty like ""I always thought Austin was cool""....

Good luck!

You have savings, you will be fine - they may ask to see a "proof of funds" letter from your bank, or they may require a few months up front since you are not working.

As for the employers, I have never had one ask me "why" I choose to relocate - only why I left my last employer. So be prepared to be asked that.
