Great advice: if one has a choice in a current housing market, beg you pardon, meant housing madness.
Another advice if you depend on others for housing: mortgage holders- if you are overextended, landlords, non-profits is to keep it simple.
Have a car with the hitch.(to tow small u-haul with your belongings)
Very basic, inexpensive, multifunctional and not heavy furniture which could be easily moved by you alone or with the friend’s help;
-perhaps a twin bed or just metal bed frame, light mattress and a change of linen.
-a small dining table which could be used as a desk; the table legs must be able to unscrew.A few folding chairs.
-some light metal racks for clothing (Ikea) instead of bulky wardrobe
-a few basic kitchen and dining items to fit in a couple of transparent plastic bins
-a transparent plastic bin for bathroom items
- basic multifunction clothing - with the limited color scheme to go with each other
-don’t have TV, use laptop, IPad for streaming
The most important - try to always save for an “untouchable” fund - your next security deposit before you even get your old place security deposit returned to you - so you could rent somewhere without a delay.
It is much tougher if you have a family. Try to apply the same as above for each family member.
In case you are completely broke.
There could be some help available from local churches and other non-profits; in a wealthier states they have some government programs - reach out?
If you are employed and must move further away due to being priced out - keep an eye on jobs openings in inexpensive housing markets nearby just in case you have to get a new job fast closer to your new rental
It is tough out there:check CL and FB marketplace for replacement items inexpensively or for free
