Imagine you lived in the same place for over a decade and love it - but have to leave and you have only 2 months. What is your game plan?

The first and the most important is - do you have a place to go?

Depends on lots of things. How far? How much stuff to move? How much are you willing to do alone? How much professional help do you need? Do you have to sell your current place? Do you have a place where you're going? Is it just you or others, pets?

Not enough info for real advice.

Only advice right now: Get started packing and purging today.

Yep, the devil tends to live in the details...care to share a few OP? You might waste less time sorting through well-intended but useless "advice".

just a hypothetical. I am hearing of so many people being given 60 days notice because landlords want to sell their rentals to flippers - and people have been renting these units for a very long time. A lot of foreclosures happening post pandemic now too - and the homeowners are only given 60 days and some have lived in the homes for decades. I am just wondering how one goes about dealing with that. Looking around - knowing you have a deadline - not really wanting to have to move - and having so much stuff stored everywhere. It just seems overwhelming. And yet the focus here in NY seems to be on the bus loads of illegals coming over - unwanted - yet the government just wants to give them free housing, meals, health care, education, clothes etc. While there are people that literally don't know what to do first to find new housing and leave their own housing due to no fault of their own - generally.

It's good to be prepared. Back in 2008 we were renting a single family home as the market was crashing and all around us renters were given no notice as their landlords got foreclosed on. Thankfully that eventually changed. But that's when we made the decision to start looking to buy in another less volatile state.

If they have a signed lease then the buyers have to honor that.
When you rent that's one of the things to watch out for...the owner sells while you are renting.
Another one is a huge rent hike when the lease comes up for renewal.

That happened to me when I rented. Either the rent got jacked up or the condo got sold.
Either way..we had to move but had months to prepare.

If you are a renter and get very little time to pack/move the best thing to do is get your valuable items packed and (maybe) into storage. Non-valuable items can be left to the last minute then call thrift shop who will pick up when you leave the door unlocked and you are gone.

The hardest part of moving/packing is last 2 nights when you've packed your kitchenware and have to wake up and pack bed and bathroom items and wait for moving truck to arrive. If you are moving in same locale it's a LOT easier than moving 1,000 miles away.

This is why you should never do a month to month lease. If you have a longer lease the buyer has to honor the terms. Neither the seller nor the new owner can just kick you out if you have a lease.

Great advice: if one has a choice in a current housing market, beg you pardon, meant housing madness.

Another advice if you depend on others for housing: mortgage holders- if you are overextended, landlords, non-profits is to keep it simple.
Have a car with the hitch.(to tow small u-haul with your belongings)

Very basic, inexpensive, multifunctional and not heavy furniture which could be easily moved by you alone or with the friend’s help;
-perhaps a twin bed or just metal bed frame, light mattress and a change of linen.

-a small dining table which could be used as a desk; the table legs must be able to unscrew.A few folding chairs.

-some light metal racks for clothing (Ikea) instead of bulky wardrobe

-a few basic kitchen and dining items to fit in a couple of transparent plastic bins

-a transparent plastic bin for bathroom items

- basic multifunction clothing - with the limited color scheme to go with each other

-don’t have TV, use laptop, IPad for streaming

The most important - try to always save for an “untouchable” fund - your next security deposit before you even get your old place security deposit returned to you - so you could rent somewhere without a delay.

It is much tougher if you have a family. Try to apply the same as above for each family member.

In case you are completely broke.

There could be some help available from local churches and other non-profits; in a wealthier states they have some government programs - reach out?
If you are employed and must move further away due to being priced out - keep an eye on jobs openings in inexpensive housing markets nearby just in case you have to get a new job fast closer to your new rental

It is tough out there:check CL and FB marketplace for replacement items inexpensively or for free
