I made several family moves with the military, most cross country. Only one was bad and the company admitted fault and made good on the damaged and missing items. Most times a crew of packers come in for one - two days and box everything up. Key is to watch them pack everything. Stay home with them. Get a couple friends or family members to watch with you. That way someone is in every room watching them pack things. You'll then catch them packing glass/china and other breakables in a box. Then to finish that box they try to put books or something else really heavy on top. Then you can say: "wait... don't put those 5lb dumbbells on top of my figurine collection, start a new box." Or, in the kitchen when they try to put canned goods on top of your glassware. They will if you don't watch them. Not watching each packer is a good recipe for a bad move.

Usually the next day the truck comes and they all load the big truck. Nothing much you can do about partial loads. All of ours were done that way. It's not cost efficient for them to move a half empty truck. Sometimes they pick up your stuff in a small truck, move it to a warehouse and then load the big truck. The big truck goes where it needs to along the way and eventually gets to your town. Sometimes it comes straight to your new house. Sometimes it goes to a local warehouse where it's unloaded, then loaded up again on a local small truck.

Finally it gets to your new house. Again, watch every worker. Inspect every box and piece of furniture. Mark it off on the inventory sheet the packers at your old house gave you, plus the unloaders should have a copy too. Pay attention to how many days you have to file a claim if you find damage or missing items... don't be late.

Good luck. Most likely you'll have a good, but stressful, move.

No one will treat your stuff like it's their own. Go online and request a quote. You'll get several. Then you can look up reviews for those companies.
