I saw that someone in another thread had asked where do you see yourself by 2020...I'm wondering, if things go on the way they are now, what do you imagine America will be like in 50 years?

I'm not sure what it'll be like, but I can tell you what I hope it'll be like.

I hope the climate is the same as it is today.

I hope guns are less plentiful, and that we haven't had anymore Columbines.

I hope we are out of Iraq by then, and that the country and the world has forgiven us for manipulation, psychological warfare and needlessly invading a country based on faulty information, or propaganda.

I hope Paris Hilton gambles her money away and lives in Compton

I hope there will be a cure for cancer.

I hope minorities, homosexuals and women have achieved equality.

I hope we can further our missions in outer space.

I hope technology doesn't take over the natural environment.

I hope the truth about 9/11 will be discovered, and confronted.

I hope the dirty politics of today become cleaner.

I hope English will still be spoken, and that South America hasn't taken over by then.

I hope that our government will have compassion to those affected by horrific natural disasters, especially those who are less fortunate.

I hope, by then, that people will be more courteous on the interstates.

I hope that we, as a country, can unite as one instead of being black, white, yellow, straight, gay, fat, skinny, Republican or Democrat.

I hope that America will learn to be more progressive than regressive or stagnant.

I hope that Republicans will realize what real conservativism is.

I hope that Democrats will unclog their ears and point their noses away from the sky.

I hope that modesty will overtake materialism, and that the desire for power will be replaced with the desire to help.

I won't hold my breath...

We'll probably have the following things

-Another "watershed year" between now and then (think 1945, 1968, 1989, 2001)

-more acceptance of multiculturalism (interracial marraiges)

-minority (esp African American) poverty rate will be less and per capita income greater relative to the rest of society

-think homophobia is as outright bizarre as white supremacy is today

-technologies that will absolutely blow us away (particularly genetic, artificial intelligence, and 'microtechnologies')

-an America more tightly connected with the rest of the globe, less provincialism.

-GW Bush will be as far behind us as the McCarthy Era is currently behind us (i.e. not much bitterness toward this country)

BUT..to temper it all

-We'll probably p.o. the world in some way between now and then (hey! 50 years gives a lot of time for a nation to muck something up!)

-If the USA is still Number One, we'll probably have to share that top spot with China, India, or the European Union.

-Greater concern for privacy issues, especially in the realm of "brain scanning" for personality traits (already showing promising results in the lab TODAY!)

-New Human Rights Concerns -- this time for the rights of Artificial Intelligences, genetically altered people (think pierced and tie-dyed, but with a genetic twist)

-Greater environmental concerns - especially because new materials might very well present new environmental dangers (especially genetic material)

Overall, the future will be a very strange place

I think the future could be pretty bleak. Have any of you ever heard of the peak oil theory? I think it will wreak havoc on the economy in the next 50 years.

Conserve!

I think in 50 years, declining oil will have created a much different world. I think the people that are left here will be living much more locally, suburbia will be a big scrap heap, and small scale agriculture and town living will be the norm.

That sounds cool to me (especially if there's flying cars in there) but do you really think the "genie" can go back in the bottle? It seems as if none of the current research is about eliminating the technology that makes modern life what it is, but just replacing it with another source.

Also, a fun thing to do is read old predictions of the future. Not the Nostradamus stuff, but the every-day stuff.

One site with some interesting reads, to include flying cars, is Welcome To The Retro Future

Do you think that 50 years ago people could have predicted what life would be like today? I was 18 back then and I know for a fact there are many things people thought would happen or exist that didn't and even more they never imagined that did. Sorry my crystal ball is out for repairs.
