9 Of The Most Polluted Places In The World (PHOTOS)

I question how accurate this list is. So where's Mexico City? Every time I've been there it horrible visibility due to air pollution. Manilla?

When you said two, I expected LA, but was not expecting Phoenix.

Yeah I agree with you, it is an odd list...especially with no mention of Manila.

There are two stories about that city that always stick out with me:

1. On my first stint for work there I was working the over night shift on the 36th floor of this office building in Makati. The "day" was ending, and I was watching the sunrise over Manila Bay, when I noticed this very large and very black cloud rolling in. I commented to one of the guys in the office "Wow, looks like we're going to get a pretty bad storm here..." His reply? "Storm? Oh, that's not a storm. That's smog."

2. Walking along the Pasig while visiting Intramuros and noticing the frothy mixture of trash, human waste, dead fish, chemicals in the water (water as thick as tar).

I do love that town though...

In some cases they seem to be going with lesser known cities and it certainly seems possible to me there's some medium-size city in Russia or China that's horrible with pollution, but that we don't think of much. Although including LA, London, and Phoenix in with those means it might not be that. Also the wording of title is up to interpretation. As worded "Nine of the most" could mean there's nine or ninety more polluted then them, but that they chose to focus on these nine.

Going by my World Alamanac Mexico City, Milan in Italy, Sofia in Bulgaria, and Beijing in China are likely the near the top. Certainly more polluted than LA or London.

The two most polluted cities I have ever been in were in China. Beijing and Shanghai. In Beijing you never saw the sky, only a yellow/brown haze just over your head. In Shanghai you could see sky every so often, but not across the river because of that same yellow/brown haze.

I expected LA to be at least number 7 or 8.
Never gave Phoenix a second thought.

Can't blame the two though. LA is in a dry valley with little rain/humidity to filter it. Phoenix is very auto-centric and sprawled... In a desert

I'm surprised with London.
