I am in South Florida and still looking to move to a less expensive, more down-to-earth place (have had some great advice on this forum, but still donig my homework).
I really hate pretentiousness, materialism, or anything reeking of trendy. I don't care about high-end stores (Target or Penney's is just fine), restaurants or schools (I have no kids). I don't make much money, so would have to have cheap rent.
I prefer a small-town, blue-collar feel, but still would like access to decent job availability (i.e. a decent size city).
Someplace with friendly, down-to-earth people...
I live in South Florida too...I hate it here......I'm contemplating on moving back to my hometown/area...it fits your requirements perfectly.....Scranton/Wilkes-Barre>>>>>
Kansas, Nebraska, Iowa, South Dakota, North Dakota, and Missouri are all very cheap places to rent. Most people are native to the area, so the simple, basic life is the standard. That said, they are very welcoming to those who share those same basic values. Most areas are very safe as well.
To top it all off, all of them have lower unemployment. Missouri is a bit higher, but still below the national average.
Pittsburgh, yeah that would work. St Louis, Idaho, Oregon (outside Portland, although Portland isn't too bad or anything just more city-ish). Avoid most of the direct east coast, I think, as well as most of metropolitan California. Small town anywhere, really. Although I bet anywhere will seem down to earth compared to South Florida.
