I can't believe you guys are fighting over which city/region has the biggest losers. How old are you???

And incidentally, the toughest gang members are the ones that get out of the gang, get an education, make something good out of their lives and give something back to the community.

You do know that lower Manhattan skews stats? If you were to get the crime rates of the NY ghettos that I meantioned, they'd smoke Cali.

The toughest places in the US are based on a few blocks, not a whole city.

Have you ever been to Scarsdale. You certainly wouldn't want to get caught in between gang warfare where the investment banker gang fight the bond trader gang.

donjuan, the stats of which city is most dangerous is based on percentages. If 1000 crimes are committed in a city of 100,000 people that worse than 3000 crimes committed in a city of 500,000 people. Make sense. New York has a huge amount of crimes committed but they are low on the list because they have a huge population that lives in safe areas.

New York has very dangerous areas, believe it. And it's quite possibly worse than places in CA because of population density. The projects in NYC probably have a density of over 25,000 people per square mile. That means a lot of crime occurs there and if you're in that area that square mile you're likely to witness a crime.

Would you rather live in a sq. mile that has 25,000 people and 5000 crime committed in a year or... in a sq. mile that has 7000 people and 1400 crimes committed in a year??? Your answer?? Anyone's answer??

Don Juan, you do know that Bronx, Queens, Brooklyn, Manhattan and Staten Island make up NYC. Staten Island and Lower Manhattan skew the NYC stats since they are relatively safe. The Bronx wont show up as a city because it's part of NYC. But since we're talking about neighborhoods, then neighborhoods in those areas are among the worst in the country.
