Unsurprising given the plethora of outdoor activities here. I think the problem with the Southern states is that their summers suck, and summers are when people do most of their outdoorsy stuff.
I think it goes beyond that. It's cultural. Sure, it's hot here during the Summer, but from mid-september until the middle of may, the weather is gorgeous: short winters, with very little snow (if any). Being obese is just ingrained in the culture here.

No it's not. Eating too much and leading a sedentary lifestyle are the #1 factors.
