LA isn't some provincial little town, ya know. Definitely open all night. Water can be a bit chilly most times of the year compared to the gulf coast, but then again you don't get stalked and harassed by giant blobs of tar from the oil spill.
Honolulu. Swim 24/7, watch fat girls hula dance, drink funny drinks in coconut shells with little tiny umbrellas in them. Smoke pacalolo. Rinse, repeat.
Oh, you wanted seasons. I guess that would be Boston.
Mmm yeah Hawaii. But isn't it Maui (?) that actually has mountains where you can so skiing and snow boarding. I'd still get to see snow, but I'd miss Fall and the leaves changing. If I had more money I'd just buy a place in the south and go back and forth
I have heard San Diego has some bars on the beach, by Pacific Beach? I might be wrong. I mean I don't think it will be anything uber exciting, but I have heard they are fun bars.
As for beaches in Chicago. If you are looking for beaches in terms just laying out in the sand on a big beautiful body of water, Chicago is good for that. However if you are looking for activities on the Lake like surfing, aquatic life, etc., then it's not the same as the ocean. Don't get me wrong, you can do plenty in the water, more or less the same things you might be able to do in any ocean, but the lack of waves or exciting aquatic life takes away a little bit from it.

I actually prefer lake water. I don't like to be pushed around incessantly by waves and rip currents. To me, water is for relaxation rather than exercise. But it might be that the water close to Chicago is a bit too toxic to swim in, regardless of what health authorities say there has been heavy industrial waste poured directly into it for over 100 years, except for the last coupla decades.
