OK -- We live in a GREAT place (except for one thing) WINTERS ARE A TAD TOO LONG! Madison, WI.

We work from home, can live anywhere in the United States. We lived in Tampa, FL for many years but it's not a great place to raise a family.

We have two sons (ages 16 Junior in high school, cross country runner and 8 years old)... they are both interested in moving too so their is no problem there. They adjust well and are happy, healthy and smart!

We're mentally all over the place with our research of our perfect place but these are a few that have us interested. Our son will be going to college in a year and a half so sometimes we wonder if we should sit tight until that happens -- he really wants to move though.

In no particular order --

Franklin, TN
Asheville, NC
Gatlinburg, TN
Raleigh, NC
Destin, FL
Overland Park, KS
Castle Rock or Denver, CO
Middleton, WI -- this would be us staying put.

Any other suggestions or ideas? If you worked from home - could live anywhere, where would it be (with kids).

Pacific Northwest, Seattle area or Bellingham WA has some great advantages. Great schools for the kids, universities and a good economy for the most part, also the weather isn’t as cold as Madison WI. There’s the beach, ocean, lakes, and the mountain forests for outdoor fun and activities.

I think North Carolina would be a good option for you, and besides Asheville or Raleigh would recommend Chapel Hill. It's a college town like Madison (University of North Carolina), and offers so much to do for it's size. It's very safe, quite family friendly, has excellent public schools and is about equidistant to either mountains or beaches (2 hours each way). The area has a moderate four season climate with pretty much an equal three months of each season. I absolutely loved living there. Important to note as well, North Carolina has an excellent state university system which your eldest could take advantage of with affordable in-state tuition.

Gatlinburg is indeed beautiful, but living in a tourist town is probably not a very good idea. It's jam packed in the summers and most of the weekends in the fall and spring. There are no grocery stores or hospitals in Gatlinburg, either.

Franklin TN, however is an excellent choice. It's a fast-growing, wealthy suburb of Nashville, but it's been a town since before the Civil War. It has a gorgeous downtown area but also has new, manicured office parks and is home to some corporate giants such as Nissan North America. It also has outstanding public schools.

One thing you might want to consider: kids who graduate from Tennessee high schools with at least a B- average receive essentially free tuition (not quite free, but deeply discounted) to Tennessee public universities, or cash towards tuition at in-state private universities. Coupled with Tennessee's very low taxes (47th lowest in the country according to the Tax Foundation) you could end up saving some serious cash by living in TN and sending your kids to TN universities.

Why not Knoxville? It has a major university and have the college town vibe there as well. Very scenic and affordable too.
