Those are your BEST options. So narrow down your criteria more, or take your pick.
Los Angeles is also in if he gets into USC or UCLA (which would put him mostly in the core where it's walkable and there is good transit).

I think he should probably think about the school and field he's trying to go for as a priority of sorts, because that will determine whether or not he will have easy access to mass transit and a dense, urban neighborhood.

Only in the very central area, so that's sort of a misconception otherwise. And Houston actually has a higher "walkscore." San Antonio is also walkable in the very central part.

Ahh okay, so essentially they could all be done if you lived and worked in downtown, but would be limited otherwise in terms of heavy mixed commercial/residential neighborhoods.

Coming from Texas, I'm assuming that affordability would likely be an important factor, so I would go for Chicago. The winters are cold, but it's also generally regarded as being a bit more easy-going than its other dense and walkable, northern counterparts.
