Yeah, I think Lafayette and Bangor were by far the hardest ones. If you know the geography of NE good enough, you can easily get ~35 cities, because its basically just NE + several largest Midwest towns.

VERY GOOD GAME!!!!
I got 30 out of 50...

Every city I did not get, I've NEVER even heard of... Well, actually except 2. Had NO idea about Lafayette and Petersburg. Surprise, surprise. I got Brooklyn in the last 2 seconds because it had JUST dawned on me that they were separate cities at one time...

First, I typed in all the cities I could think of that I knew were highly populated then, then I just started throwing out almost every city I could think of!!! Surprised to NOT see a LOT of cities on there anywhere

THATS WHATS UP SON!

<-- got all of the cities from New York State.

Was actually surprised cities like Hartford, Trenton, Scranton, and Wilkes-Barre were not on the list.
Scranton and Wilkes-Barre didn't prosper until the Coal Age, a little later than 1850. I was surprised about Hartford and Trenton, though. Interesting that only 2 of them were west of the Mississippi: St Louis and Lafayette. The upstate NY cities were canal towns, and the Southern cities were ports. 1850 is a bit before railroads came into their own, so interesting to see how the most common way to haul freight (boat or ship) held much sway as far as population growth went in those days.

Spring Garden, Pennsylvania a top city...who knew?
I did miss a big one in New Orleans...should've known from how often it's mentioned in Westerns (as a "fun-time" city).

I got 29/50.
Missed most of the cities from Massachusetts/New York that aren't as big or well known today.
