The fact that Greenville, South Carolina even has a decent downtown(if it actually does) is actually more interesting to me at this point. I don't really believe it's among what I'd find to be the top 10 downtowns in the country--but it's just a list.
well, let me put it this way.
in my opinion, Greenville has the 3rd best downtown in SC, behind Charleston and Columbia. Neither of those are on the list.
i also believe Winston-Salem has at best the 3rd best downtown in NC, behind Wilmington and Asheville, and that's being very generous. In reality you could place it 7th behind Raleigh, Greensboro, Durham, and Charlotte, and I wouldn't really argue.
Oh, and I have been to San Antonio, and putting them as the best city in Texas is just weird.
I don't think that's a good read at all. I think the author of that list was being very lazy. It is worse than random, most members of this forum could come up with a better list.
1. Chicago, Il
2. Portland, Or
3. Burlington, Vt
4. Indianapolis, In
5. San Antonio, Tx
6. Savannah, Ga
7. Kansas city, Mo
8. Winston-Salem, Nc
9. Greenville, Sc
10. Santa Monica, Ca

Lazy? Seems to me that many members would re-hash the usual suspects -- NYC, Chicago, Philly, SF, etc. -- based on size and recognition alone. THAT is lazy. That this list includes a lot of cities most wouldn't think of tells me they did their homework. But you must also consider the criteria.

You can't honestly be serious. Columbia's downtown isn't even remotely close to Greenville in terms of cleanliness or accessibility. As for Charleston, while I do love it, I'm not sure what's so special about the downtown. Possibly the homeless people taking up all the shade trees and park benches in the summer?
If any other downtown in South Carolina deserved to be on list, it would be Beaufort.
I have lived in 8 different cities in 6 different states, and Greenville certainly deserved a place on that list.

Indianapolis doesn't belong on any list of "best downtowns," regardless the criteria. This is a pawn shop and chain restaurant hell if ever there was one. I'm sorry, but the presence of a nice basketball arena does not a great downtown make. It's America's most overrated downtown, for sure.
Here's one that's actually based on a more rationale person's assumptions, and not necessarily in order...
1. New York
2. Chicago
3. Los Angeles
4. San Francisco
5. Boston
6. Miami
7. Philadelphia
8. Dallas
9. Houston
10. Seattle (or Atlanta)
Miami? Really? Downtown Miami has no shopping, no restaurants, no nightlife, no nothing. It has a nice skyline but it's almost all condos. Miami's big shopping/restaurant/nightlife district is Miami Beach. The folks that live downtown have to drive to get to anything.
Is odd to see KC on the list. I'd say it's one of the most _improved_ downtowns over last 10 years but not really a top 10. Sometimes it's really hopping though if there are multiple events going on, which is becoming more common. Feels like an energetic downtown in those cases. Not consistently busy enough though to be top 10.
I would say in order
1 NY
2 Chicago
3 San Fransico
4 Boston
5 Philadelphia
6 DC
7 Seattle
8 Los Angeles
9 Minneapolis
10 Denver
fixed it for you
