I've been lazy about making this post, but here goes nothing.
Long story short, my fiance and I are currently living in Terrible Tampa, and being bred in New York, this is not the place for us. We're looking to make a move at some point (our lease is up in May but we're probably going to renew for another year, so possibly mid-2013) but we'd like to start figuring out well in advance where we want to go.
This is a short list of what we'd like in a city:
Houses under $200,000 (money is not really an objective, but this would be ideal for us).
Good education, good place to raise a child.
Smallish town where maybe not everybody knows your name, but you might know most people on the block.
Winter. We believe in cities that actually know to get cold during the end/beginning of the year, preferably in the northeastern part of the US, though we're not opposed to the western or midwestern side.
Something either decently walkable or with decent public transportation. We don't need to live next door to all of the shops, but we don't mind walking four or five blocks to get what we need.
Of course, the most ideal place for me personally would either be in my hometown in eastern Queens or Southampton, but I'm no millionaire!
Ithaca, Glens Falls, Plattsburgh, Corning and Lockport, among others in Upstate NY. Villages that are the center of good sized districts could work too. Perhaps Liverpool, Fairport, Kenmore, Scotia, New Hartford, Endwell and Horseheads are some examples that could fit. What about employment?
Burlington VT or surrounding area. Housing in the city is around 250k probably, and the surrounding area you could find something under 200k. Some of my best friends live here, i met these people and in a week we were hanging out all the time. I found it easy to click with my neighbors, knew most of he people on the block. Burlington's great because it has a small town feel, but at the same time its a hub for the entire area so you wont run out of things to do. Its off lake champlain, close to mountains, and an hour or less to montreal.
It has great schools as well, you wouldnt worry about that really, but there's no place id rather raise a child.
When i lived there, i didnt have a car for the second half. It broke down and i decided i no longer needed it anymore, it is such a bike friendly city and easy to get places on foot. There's also the daily amtrak to NY, which is really long but i enjoyed more than driving, it's only 6 hours. (bad attempt at sarcasm)
Winter. it is one of the northernmost cities in the US, and about as different as you can get from florida. Skiing, probably 5 of my all time favorite ski areas in the us are located an hour from burlington. (Yes i've skied out west, i still like these better.)
In my opinion, it has the perfect weather. Not too hot, not too cold, just right. actually maybe it can get a little cold in the winter.. .
previous reccomendations of NY cities agreed with as well.
Other places in Vermont that i lived, loved, and left are Brattleboro, very far southeast small urban ,very hilly town, located on the amtrak as well. Winooski's great as well, very small city just outside burlington, great community, and mad props to their vietnamese cafe.
Anyway check em out, i seriously think you'd like these, especially burlington, for a change.
