DO NOT SAY NYC !

I hate driving, hate it. I also suck at it. So if I relocate many moons from now, where is a good city that I could ditch the car and use public transportation? (Preferably rail system or walking over bus but that works too). I'm in Jersey but I wanted some other options besides NYC. Also is there anyone that lives currently without a car? What is it like really? thanks.

^^ pretty much what he said.

Though a lot of smaller/mid-sized cities are all improving their infrastructure, so it's getting better at least.

I live without a car. Naturally I'm a bit more limited since I don't live in a large city, but my town has a surprisingly good bus system. I also walk a lot, and bike when I need to carry heavy or bulky items. I was planning to buy a car when I first moved here but just never needed to.

I lived in San Francisco without a car so that is definitely doable. I believe you can also rely on public transportation in Boston, Washington, D.C. and Philadelphia.

Chicago, DC, Boston, San Francisco, Philly. Probably in that order.

Yeah that's about right. In about 10 years, you can add LA since they are adding so many lines and miles to it's transit system right now. Or is that too soon?

LA's busses are great now though.

Believe it or not there's more than 4 or 5 cities with extensive public transit as long as you can bury the expectation of walking one or two blocks to a subway line. If you want out of a high rent/high dollar city but want to keep a public transit lifestyle in a dense urban area check out:

Aside from NY, I'd say Chicago, DC, Boston, Philly, and SF in that order. These are cities that are fairly easy to live in without a car.

Other cities such as Seattle, Portland, Minneapolis, Cleveland, Baltimore, and Pittsburgh have decent public transit, but I personally wouldn't live in them without a car. I think if I lived in one of these cities, I would find myself taking public transit on a regular basis, but I think I'd also need access to a car on a regular basis. These aren't full car-dependent cities, but they aren't exactly car-free either.
