i'm in the DFW primarily for my career but its almost time to wrap up this Texas adventure. The weather here and lack of beautiful scenery isn't cutting it for me.
Could no longer afford the ever increasing COL in Portland. On a lesser note, got tired of seeing my once quiet, friendly, unique pretty little neighborhood of 25 years and others like it turned into overcrowded, littered, uglified typical urban cookie-cutter looking types that could be Anywhere USA.
Came here a year after meeting someone on my spring break from college in Northern California- stayed while he finished up school down here and started a good career. 28 years later we are still together here. My success has been more modest and probably could have done better elsewhere but I enjoy what I do.
We've stayed because his career is going great, the city (urban core) has pretty well transformed itself the last 20 years which we fully participate in. We managed to buy a nice historic house in an up and coming neighborhood when you could still afford to, so the high COL which is mainly tied to R.E. hasn't priced us out of living here.
It's not the greatest city to live in but a fun city that is pretty easy navigate and find plenty of interesting activities, and if you are lucky to own in the vibrant historic neighborhoods adjacent downtown with the parks and canyons nearby it is almost ideal.
I wouldn't say we've stayed for the weather- it is nice but we prefer more rain and variety- which we get by visiting a lot of other cities at all times of the year. Career wise this city can be a bad choice, except for a few select industries it is hard to advance and while you can be well paid you don't make more than in a city like Minneapolis but housing will cost four times as much.
I left Salt Lake City, where I loved living, to come to Austin in 1996. I can't believe I've been here 18 years! I came to be with family who had relocated to the area. I intended to stay maybe two or three years but things evolved where I couldn't leave. My mom's health declined and I didn't want to leave and be farther from her. After she passed away, my sister/roommate began to decline in health also. Eventually I found myself in a caretaker role and since she couldn't leave, I couldn't. She passed away a few months ago. Now I am just wrapping things up and planning to make my move. I hope to leave and move on to the next phase of life around the first of the year.
Austin has been mostly enjoyable but it's not an area I would choose for myself. Now that family is gone, I will be too.
