Last summer, I went on a road trip through the Bible Belt (coming from Connecticut), and noticed that every 10 miles or so of driving, I would see a set of 3 crucifixes EXACTLY as you see in the photo below, on the sides of the roads. Are southerners seriously that fanatic about Christianity? Nothing against it, but wow, it's quite the scenery change, and IMO an eye-sore lol. There's nothing like that up here in New England, ever. I just think it's kind of ironic that the Northeast is far more prosperous, safer and educated than the Deep South, yet they are extremely religious. Also, why are 70% of the radio stations Christian music about Jesus? I could'nt even find a decent station that plays Rhiana! Can someone please explain to me what the story is behind these crucifixes? Don't get me wrong...I love visiting the South...it's wicked beautiful!

These went up in the 1980s. Mostly in West Virginia (but you do see them all over Appalachia) by some coal and oil millionaire. All he wanted to do was remind people of Jesus' suffering. I even saw a set in Colorado and in New York State.

I like the folk art attributes of his project. A real piece of Americana.

Often crosses by the road are memorials of a fatal car crash that took place there.

Please enlighten me on which market has 70% of their stations "play Christian music about Jesus."

This should be fun.

I'm from Texas and I've never seen anything like that. And the radio dial here is not 70% Christian music, far from it.

In New Orleans, 100% of the radio stations are Buddhist. And Rihanna is outlawed, thank Allah.
