Need I say more? Which is your favorite city on the east coast and why? Favorite city on the Gulf Coast and why? Favorite city on the West Coast and why?
Having never been to the West Coast myself, I don't think I'm in a position to pass judgement there. For the east coast I definitely pick New York just because of how large and full of life it is compared to every other East Coast city IMO. It's also the only major city on the East Coast I've been to so again my judgement probably is not that great. If New Orleans had not been wrecked by Katrina, that city would have been my choice because it essentially drew the attitudes of a Southern coastal city combined with the culture of the Mississippi River as well as a true melting pot. New Orleans when I visited there in 1993 or 1994 had more flavor and distinction and culture than any city I've seen since then. Post-Katrina I guess I'd have to resort to Houston.
I guess if "coastal" is relative speaking, that makes my answers all the easier....
East: Boston & DC (though they are two of the last places I would want to LIVE), as well as Charleston, SC and Williamsburg, VA (I'll count it as a city given it's proximity to Hampton-Va Beach)...all rich with culture and history; endless museums and memorials.
Gulf: New Orleans, as well as Pensacola (because of the best beaches in the continental U.S in the vicinity)
Pacific: Vancouver, BC. It didn't say "U.S". Every city should be like Vancouver in alot of respects, especially the abundant recreational offerings at your toes while living in a major metropolitan. Very laid back and safe for such a large city. I'll throw in San Fran (again no place I'd ever want to live though), San Diego, and Santa Barbara as well for obvious reasons.
Charleston and Savannah are my favorite places to visit on the East Coast. I love visiting Boston as well. Once during a visit to Boston I happened on a recreation of the Make Way for Ducklings short story -- what a treat!

Resort? Houston is not something you resort to. Houston is the original choice of class, lol. Just kidding.
