Here in Memphis, I only hear it when college students are meeting someone for the first time and trying to break the ice. And I suppose the private school crowd asks this question as well. But with public schools, they change so much over the years that finding out where someone went to high school doesn't really tell you anything about that person.

Nope. In the Washington, D.C. area it's all about "Where do you work?" "What do you do for a living?" and "Where do you live?"

Nobody ever asks or cares about what high school you went to. They very likely wouldn't know anyway because there are so many transplants from everywhere. Sometimes, people ask about what college or university you got your degree from. But even that is not all that common in everyday conversation.

Common in Cincinnati, St louis, might be big in Cleveland, Indy, Milwaukee, etc. Maybe it's only big in cities that do not have a lot of transplants and are not really that relevant anymore.

That really is a bizarre question though! I've heard where did you go to school as in college but never high school unless the person you are meeting is from the same area and the subject comes up through conversation.

Could it be a blue collar vs white collar type thing? Most of the circles I hang out with are college educated and when out and about we meet college educated persons and the subject of high school never comes.

Don't mean to be harsh but St Louis and Cincinnati do seem kind of irrelevant these days. St Louis is the 19th largest metro in the US but nowadays the just seem to be a like a forgotten or rarely talked about metro in the national scope. Same could be said about Cincinnati, both were huge powerhouse cities many decades ago but nowadays they are kind of sleepy river towns and great places to raise a family.

I've lived in the Twin Cities for a long time but was only asked that question once, by a co-worker who found out I graduated from high school in Miami the same year he graduated from high school in Miami. We then had a nice "back in the day" conversation. (Turned out his school and mine were rivals.)

That question is absolutely synonymous with St. Louis! If I've heard it once, I've heard it a thousand times. Sounds innocent, but...there's usually a motivation behind it. Sometimes the person asking just wants to know if the two of you know anyone in common. Other times, I think they are fishing for what your family's economic status is, such as "Oh, you went to La-due High School? Well, la-di-da."
