Currently New Jersey and Oregon are the only states in the nation where full-service gas is provided and mandatory (This does not mean gas is more expensive).
It is prohibited to fill up ones' own gas, so a worker must do it for you in those two states.

No, I want to do it myself; I'm capable of doing it without blowing anything up. Do we really want people to only try to get a job pumping gas for the rest of their lives anyway?

That actually sounds like a horrible job. Probably isn't even worth minimum wage. Especially in places with harsh climates.

I don't want anybody pumping gas for me. It seems very very old fashioned, like from the Andy Griffith days or something.

It's been nearly 40 years since mini-serve (gas pumping only with no window washing or other things) and self-serve has been the the norm so that's how many generations that have no clue what you're talking about with full serve gas?

I think I read where New Jersey is getting rid of self-serve requirements soon, if it hasn't already happened. I worked at a gas station when the change over happened in the 70's and it was hilarious to watch people try to figure out how to pump their gas.

One station here kept full serve until it closed three or four years ago. The owner mainly did it so relatives had a job.

The advantage was that your car got a quick check for oil and eyeballed for coolant. That did keep other issues from happening. The reality is that the vast majority of people then, and likely even more now, never perform those basic checks. I can't count the number of cars that I had to put 2 or 3 quarts of oil in, and we're talking nearly 40 years ago.

Yeah, everytime I drive into New Jersey and go to a gas station, I have to remind myself not to get out of the car.

I used to go out of my way to go to full service gas stations.
Of course this was back when gas was a lot cheaper and it wasn't a big price difference.
They'd pump it for you and wash your window and check the oil.

I miss that and although I did vote "yes", I wonder about how long it would be waiting for the attendant to come service you especially in a city like mine with 5 million people. This isn't some small home town, there's gas stations on all four sides of the intersections with 10 pump islands at each one. I like to get in an out as fast as possible a lot of the time. I'd be willing to be a little more patient for the added convenience but if it's going to take a lot longer than I probably wouldn't want that.

Its a good thing for the elderly drivers to have the additional services at a full service gas station. But I can pump my own, wash the windshield, check the oil, etc. We should probably have both.

I'm glad I do it myself. First of all, I am fully capable of doing it myself. Secondly, the last thing I want is for someone to mishear and put the wrong amount in. Thirdly, it just doesn't sit well with me. Different culture I guess. I can't imagine the service is that good, they deal with 100s of people daily.
