A lot of small cities and towns along the Hudson River fit the description.

Beats me. What about cities where people aren't afraid to be weird and prone to self-expression? Or cities with strong economies where people can go to pursue their dreams of making it big in their chosen field. Aren't those people being real?

But cities where people all grow up sitting on their arse watching the same local sports team and struggle to make ends meet while watching their manufacturing jobs ship off to China--those places are full of the "real" people.

In that case, I'll take being fake.

I think I gave a pretty good definition: places where people are down to earth, unpretentious, and are honest and realistic about their assessment of themselves and others. This is opposed to fake places where people are preoccupied with their appearance and status, and are often disingenuous or fake when it comes to their assessment of themself and others.

Then Santa Cruz, Berkeley, Austin, Ann Arbor, Cambridge, New Orleans, Eugene, Savannah should be on that list.

Only fake people think being "real" means "telling it like it is", or "being down to earth".

Being real means when the ish hits the fan, the folks you held down when things were gravy, your still there. I'm real cause my family and friends I am going to be on there side and ride for them weather it makes me the most popular and safe man or the most hated man in danger and I don't give a damn about anyone's opinion on it. If you have abandoned people that you claim to be down with for any reason at any time in your life you are a fake punk, I'm real cause I will die before I sell out or abandon anyone in my family.

Real talk, 90% of people regardless of where you live are fake. Only fake and confused people think certain cities or places have more real places than other places. Everywhere on this earth there are real and fake people and the real is an extreme minority everywhere. Being fake is always easier than being real. If your popular, you are probably not real.
