Can anyone give me some suggestions about different cities in the Southeast? We're retiring and would like to move south from Chicago. My fear is that we wouldn't be accepted by most southern communities because we're not ultra-conservative nor religious. We're not adverse to religion... we just don't want to live in a community that revolves around everything Jesus. We love music, good food, and don't want to drive 50 miles to get to the closest Target.

Not interested in South Florida --- too hot.
Not interested in New Orleans --- too humid.
Not interested in Mississippi --- too ... Mississippi.

Any suggestions?

As long as you don't live in a really rural area, you should be okay. Are you looking for a smaller city or a large city? There are plenty of options.

Thanks for the reply. I love the convenience of having a big city nearby, but I don't have to live "in" the city. I like having good restaurants (not chains) nearby, and good live music. I also enjoy the mountains. I've lived in the suburbs of Birmingham and Atlanta in the past. BHM was too religious and ATL was too urban for my taste. Somewhere in-between would be nice.

Maybe Tennessee, North Carolina, or South Carolina would suit your tastes?

Have you considered either Chattanooga, Athens, Knoxville, Murfreesboro, Columbia, or Asheville?

Asheville is liberal and in the mountains, but I'm not sure about live music. It's a metro of less than 500K.

Nashville is near the mountains and is known for live music, but I'd imagine that the suburbs are more on the religiously conservative side.

Lexington, KY might also be a consideration; it's a college town so there should be a nice selection of live music venues and it's not too far from the mountains. Living in the city itself, which isn't as large as Birmingham or Atlanta, shouldn't be much of a concern as far as religious conservatism goes.

Add Roanoake VA and Greensboro NC to your list. Possibly Johnson City TN. I'm not sure about Murfreesboro. Nashville has a good music scene and East Nashville is pretty liberal - but it's not really that close to the mountains.

You probably will feel more accepted living in the citiy or in a suburb favored by transplants.

I suppose we should just end this discussion right now.... sinse Asheville is the only acceptable city in the south. The rest of us should just resign from the country - Oh wait....

Plus Asheville residents are just so humble .

But seriously - I tend to think of Chicagoans as pretty down to earth. If that's so then Asheville might not be the best fit.
