Yes, I have been to MKE, on more than one occasion. My first time there was when I was about 18 (so around 2000/1), second time there was at 21 (2003/4), and last time there was last summer. While I was there I hung out downtown, Bay View, Brady, checked out the campus, went to a brewers game, went to the art museum, checked out third ward and a bunch of other crap. I did NOT like the city. Why must I justify disliking the city when others who put yes do not have to justify liking it?
However, I do enjoy Madison, WI and Minneapolis, MN, but those are the only two cities in the midwest that I actually liked.
Dude, you've got to get a handle on your defensiveness. No one told you that you must defend disliking the place. I was just curious. To each his own. I'm not saying you're wrong. Sounds like a pretty nice time you had in MKE, but it's your right to not see it that way.

You don't...I totally understand why some may not like Milwaukee, this post is not about justifying opinions. HOWEVER, I am interested in the reasons why you or others dislike it (or like it) just more to pick the thoughts of others. So just the reasons why I would be curious in, not to have to justify anything or not.
I would also be interested in a poster like BacktoNE who obviously would hate living here - that is cool - would just be interested in the reasons why not.
For instance, I personally would never wish to live in Boston, and could cite reasons why I wouldn't want to, and that's cool - obviously tons of people love Boston and do live there. To each there own. But I would just be interested genuinely in hearing opinions of why either way for MKE.
Also, GoBeavs, one thing I would be curious about, you liked Madison and Minneapolis but not Milwaukee - what do you like about the other two that you don't like in MKE (MKE size-wise is obviously right between those two with similar weather). It sounds like you are in your early-20s, usually MKE is seen as a good party city, but maybe that isn't big to you and that's cool of course, or, what campus did you go to (UWM or Marquette?).
Thanks everyone for their responses thus far and input!
Never planned on living here. Dh's job in Columbus closed when the plant moved to Japan. We ended up with job offers in Illinois(down by Indiana), Minneapolis and Milwaukee. The job in Milwaukee was the best offer with the better company. I would have probably picked Minneapolis based on location thou. I have been pleasantly surprised by Milwaukee. Beautiful lake, nice restarants and lots of things to do. My only complaint is the Milwaukee interchange project which takes you a different way in and out of the city every time you go. It led me to being lost several times, although now I find my way around a bit more. We actually go downtown more than when we lived in Columbus.
Milwaukee is very clannish. If you're not from there - you're never one of them. Historically it's been all about where you grew up and "who you are"... (and, BTW people who are from Wisconsin don't seem to leave WI...)
Milwaukee's rednecks wear leather and ride Harleys.
Corrupt police, too many personal injury attorneys, HIGH property taxes....and then you've got Governor Doyle.
The outcome of recent trials, such as the Lawrencia "Laurie" Bembenek and Frank Jude, Jr. case, speaks volumes about the fairness of Milwaukee's legal system... sad but true.
Personally, I'm not from MKE and I'm glad to be gone from there.
Too bad, I really like the weather!

Reason: grammar...
I used to live in Milwaukee and had no complaints. The waterfront is excellent, there is great biking and walking and the city is relatively safe compared to other big midwestern cities. Transit options aren't the best there but they are tolerable if you love riding the bus.
the truth is that Milw. is not that dirty of a city. It is composed of many wonderful neighborhoods. there are parts that most people wouldn't live in, there are in every city. Most factories are closed, and they are redeveloping the Pabst Brewery, those dingy factories make some cool lofts. I have seen alot of cities, and Milw. isn't half as dirty as other cities I have seen. San Francisco, Washington, Saint Louis, Los Angeles, et. al. It may be cold, and the economy may have taken a hit. You may not even like the Midwest. All legitimate responses. Calling it a dirty, industrial heap is unrealistic. The air quality in Milw. is fine. the little pollution that is still made quickly goes over the lake.
I voted yes, but only if I would have to put up with the winter
Milwaukee is very similar to Chicago, maybe even better since its less hectic
