After responding to a question about major US cities that often are not talked about, I couldn't help but think of my hometown and current town - Milwaukee, WI.
This is a major US city with a metro area between 1.5 to 1.7 million people, we have 2 major league sports teams (MLB and NBA) with the Packers (NFL) essentially being a Milwaukee team as well, we are located on the shores of a Great Lake (Lake Michigan) and have some notable architecture - especially Downtown.
However, we live in the huge shadows of Chicago - the 3rd largest city in the US - only 80 or so miles away, and often times that overshadows Milwaukee. Thus, we are often forgotten about. Also, our weather here is infamous for being poor in the winter and spring (even though it is no worse than Chicago's and Detroit's and probably even a bit better than the Twin Cities'); yet, between Chicagoland, the Twin Cities, Detroit Metro, and Milwaukee Metro, the population is roughly 21 million people.
So my question - would you live in Milwaukee (relatively happily) if you had to? And then...why or why not?
Yes! I went there this summer and I really like it! it definently seems very livable to me and I think I would chose living in Milwakee over chicago actually
Before visiting MKE I would have said "No way!" After visiting, I know I could definitely live there. I'd rather live 80 miles south.... but MKE is a neat place. I went to one of the COOLEST BARS IN THE WORLD there a few months ago. It was crazy.
I do wonder if those who are so vehemently against it have been there. If so, did they go to the downtown area? If so, what time of year was it? I usually visit in the summer and fall and it's really nice.
it has nothing to do with the midwest at all, it has to do with MILWAUKEE. Most people will say theyll never live there just because they think its another Detroit, which its absolutely NOT.

Yes, I have been to MKE, on more than one occasion. My first time there was when I was about 18 (so around 2000/1), second time there was at 21 (2003/4), and last time there was last summer. While I was there I hung out downtown, Bay View, Brady, checked out the campus, went to a brewers game, went to the art museum, checked out third ward and a bunch of other crap. I did NOT like the city. Why must I justify disliking the city when others who put yes do not have to justify liking it?
However, I do enjoy Madison, WI and Minneapolis, MN, but those are the only two cities in the midwest that I actually liked.
