The salaries vary so much that it's hard to find where you get paid enough to be better than the cost of living. Also, cost of living is tough to figure out from stats. Real world experience would be so much nicer!

Looking for cheap cost of living relative to teacher salaries. High school female science teacher with great background and 6 years of experience. Husband does computer-related work in different fields.
Would prefer it's a bigger city, or very close (40 minutes or less) to a city area.
Phoenix and Vegas are family cities? In my experience Vegas isn't really family friendly or at the very least, it's not PREFERABLE place to start a family compared to St. George, UT or similar.

Phoenix is a pretty family friendly city it's just like any other big city I've been to both and between the two would choose Phoenix over Vegas for raising a family. You might also check out Tucson or the Texas cities like San Antonio.

2. It's definitely hot and snows maybe once every two decades lol.
3. You can easily get a nice home in a safe neighborhood full of families and family-friendly activities.
4. Jax's COL is very low...and tons of affordable housing.
5. It is a bigger city.
Based on your list, so far so good, but there are plenty of reasons why you might not like Jax. For example, teaching at a Duval County Public School can range from a great experience to abysmal, but the odds are not good. On the bright side, we have an amazing new superintendent...hot shot rock star from Miami who turned down offers from Philly and Chicago and is the youngest superintendent ever at a Big 20 (20 largest school districts in the country) People have been raving about him since he arrived in the fall and I had a chance to sit down with him last week came away thoroughly impressed. I'm really glad he's here. Don't know how quickly he can turn things around, but if anyone can do it it's him.
