I dont quite agree there. Ive had excellent Vietnamese in San Jose, Houston, Dallas, and Seattle. The quality is the same, just not quite as many options.

Yes, I've been there. I even shopped at the Asia Garden Mall, where I noticed that about a third of the storefronts appeared to be different branches of the same jewelry store, and I got ripped off when ordering a soft drink with no ice at the food court (they had a "no ice line" on their cups).

Things that jumped out at me when looking at the data:

1. New York and Chicago have surprisingly small shares of Vietnamese, given their "melting pot" reputations.

2. Kansas, Oklahoma and Louisiana have surprisingly large shares.

3. Outside the Southern and Western U.S., the largest Vietnamese populations belong not to New York and New Jersey, but to Massachusetts and Pennsylvania.

4. Excepting the Northeastern megalopolis, the Vietnamese population seems to thin out from south to north, and from west to east.

This is my 8,000th post on City Data WOOOOO!!!

the Vietnamese seem to proportionately favor Southern states compared to other Asian ethnic groups.

A lot of them are shrimpers & live near the Gulf Coast because that's where their livelihood is. The humid, semi-tropical weather is also similar to Vietnam.

what do you mean by southern states? approximately 40% of Vietnamese Americans live in California and 14% in Texas. I dont consider these southern states.

Or do you mean that Vietnamese dont tend to live in the Northeastern section of the US? IE Chinese in New york?

I didn't bring California into this and you don't know what PROPORTIONATELY means?

That means in the Southern states- Yes that means Texas- within the context of Asian-Americans- there are more Vietnamese represented in those states than other Asian groups (Chinese-Americans or Filipino-Americans), are represented in those states.

Texas is definitely Southern (particularly Houston).

Exactly. The weather and swampy terrain by the Gulf favors seafood and shrimping, like Vietnam, so it is easy for them to get accustomed too. This is popular with other ethic groups; Persians in LA due to similar weather in terrain, Cubans in Miami, Puerto Ricans in Orlando. Similar scenery and terrain.
