This is true regarding the Chicago subway but I was thinking in terms of the bus. I used to travel from various neighborhoods by transferring from one bus line to another. Also, the El train was pretty good too. I wouldn't argue that cars are more flexible and certainly everyone is aware of that but public transportation, if it is good, can get you where you are going without the hassle that driving can bring.
All in all, it is my belief that it should be a choice, car or public transportation, and putting a stigma on either one as many people do is just ridiculous.
