This post is to help a family member. They are looking for a home for no more than 250k in the suburbs of a large or mid sized city. Schools are important and an updated home is a requirement. They'd like to be as close as possible to family in Maine but prefer more moderate climate.

Can anyone suggest cities to look into?

How many of those places have above average (presumably public) schools?

If we are talking about suburbs then we are talking about some great school districts. Metro Detroit and metro Indianapolis have some great schools.

NYC to Portland, ME is an almost 6 hour drive without stops. If they're willing to go even that far, they could live in California, as it's a 6 hour non-stop plane trip. Or Florida. Or Oregon. Or anywhere that fits their criteria that has a decent airport.

Just saying, "close" is all a matter of perspective.
