Just saying, "close" is all a matter of perspective.
I think the difference is that they could fly from NYC to Portland in a very short time, along with possibly taking that 6 hour drive. Same with other Northeastern areas.

Take a look at West Hartford Ct, where the schools are good, you can still find a house for c 250K, and also have an easy drive to Maine, Boston, NYC, and of course Hartford

Yeah, Hartford is a good suggestion. Excellent suburban schools, and cheap for the Northeast Corridor.

Albany/Saratoga area would be another decent choice. Basically same deal as Hartford (very good suburban schools and relatively cheap).

Yes, but do those places actually have a more "moderate climate"?

That will likely be the trade off, as CA would defeat the purpose of close proximity to ME.

Well, yeah, but nowhere is both close to Maine and moderate climate. Can't have both. Long Island probably comes the closest, and has the mildest climate in the Northeast, but Long Island is extremely expensive.

All these places in the Northeast have a somewhat more moderate climate than Maine, though, unless you're living in the Adirondacks or something.
