However, if a minority lands a high-paying job and career or a business opportunity in a metro area that happens to be 95% white, he or she will rarely turn it down on the basis of demographics alone.
I'm with most others on here, I could definitely live in an area of a major metro that had a low black percentage, but the overall metro had a lot, but I definitely wouldn't want to live in a place like Fargo, ND. Wouldn't know where to get a haircut and I'd be bored to tears with the nightlife options and I'd probably just miss seeing a black face here and there
I'm Asian. It really depends on where and what the proportion of the other races are. I'd shy away from any city that's 90%+ of any one race. There's usually something screwy with a town if the demographics are that lopsided. It also depends on what direction the racial demographics are trending. I'd be fine with a 1% Asian city if I was confident more would be moving in over the next decade. Also, as alluded to earlier in the thread, race relations and segregation varies from city to city. Diversity is only nice if most people get along.
Now I wouldn't go that far. For small towns, typically historical settlement patterns help to explain that. Pick any small town in any of the Plains states and you'll find a lot of towns 90%+ White and that's to be expected given their histories.

There are actually a few Black people in Fargo due to some that go to North Dakota State, a military presence, some that move from bigger cities and some refugees/immigrants. Not sure about nightlife though.

I have talked to many executive level workers who refuse to move to certain areas based on demographics. Sometimes it's related to race, sometimes culture, and sometimes sexual orientation ... but, let's not pretend that our non-working hours don't have a sway in such decisions.
Its a fact of life in the parts of the midwest. I have seen and met many African Americans who were the only blacks in thier town. Some are happy and vital parts of their community.
